I had heard of this, and I appreciate the link to the paper. It’s one reason I used the term. My understanding of it is that these seldom actually work in practice. It did not help Twitter, for example. I appreciate the counter-argument. I definitely want this to be a thing.

I know a lot of indy game developers do their thing hoping to get rich from it. And there’s nothing wrong with that. And they don’t all do that. Some people just really love coding and creating, and just want to make a cool game. Nothing wrong with that, either.

But for once, I’d love to see some brilliant founder create a game studio that has some kind of poison pill clause that prevents it from ever going public or it’s IP ever being purchased by a large mega-corp. And in my wettest of wet dreams, that idea becomes a meme.

Something tells me that here in the United States of Greed, such a thing is ‘un-possible’, legally speaking. Our whole corrupt system is set up to make half a dozen business bros get wealthier. They won’t tolerate anything that jams a wrench into that machinery.

I got a lot of complaints from family, too. Especially because I block Meta. I just let them bitch and I tell them things like “those ads are broken because of malware” which isn’t entirely untrue.

Yup. I have friends at work. We don’t really hang out after work or anything. Some of us do regularly text each other outside of work. Mostly jokes and memes, though sometimes other topics.

While I don’t look at my job as a social outlet or meet up place, I do think it’s good to be sociable and friendly at work. Of course there are a few snake-in-the-grass types at work that I maintain distance from. Professional detachment type of thing.

I have a dozen friends or so that I keep in regular contact with (to varying degrees). That’s plenty for me. I’m open to new friends but I am not an active “friend collector” like some people seem to be. Some super extroverted people I know seem to use it to keep score or something. I tend to drift away from that type of person, and then hope they take the hint. My least favorite are the ones you haven’t heard from in years and then they text you out of the blue wanting to reconnect. I don’t ghost them, but I do duck out of it. They’re just bored and being a pest.

They have been cracking down on ad blockers (like Ublock) on the free version of YouTube. If you have YouTube Premium, they don’t care if you use an ad blockers, at least for now.

Google also has a project in the works where only “verified” browsers with no extensions (or only approved ones) will be allowed to use web sites that implement the restrictions. I don’t know the current status or if it will happen, but it’s scary stuff.

Just be careful, there are some legit concerns that they could ban you. Getting banned from YouTube wouldn’t be too bad, but getting banned from all Google services could be highly disruptive for a lot of people (gmail, Android phones, maps, many other things).

Pure speculation on my part, but large corporations like Google always have endless meetings full of people just looking for any kind of shit to justify their jobs. I figured it was inevitable before some goons there put their sites on ad blockers and am surprised it took this long. After all, those of us that use them (including me) are using their resources without giving them any revenue in return. (Well, that’s not entirely true, I was a Premium subscriber until they hiked the price again).
