    He’s right though.

    Mac & cheese really is unimpressive. Spaghetti Carbonara is way better, even with inaccurate ingredients (e.g. using bacon instead of guanciale or even pancetta).

    Though if you do insist on making it 'Murican style, try melting the cheese into a bechamel sauce and adding some diced ham or cubed bacon. The former makes it way creamier, even if it ends up standing for a while, and the latter just adds some neat flavour and texture. Stick with ham and/or bacon, or maybe very few other things, otherwise it stops being mac & cheese imo.

    I saw a story once of someone who asked internet strangers whether they were the asshole because they hated someone’s mac & cheese. When they described what went into the stuff, it was full of added things, a quarter of which would already stop it from being mac & cheese, and half of which either conflict with each other, or are stuff which if they were the sole additive would give me a reason to nope out of the dish.

    With both mac & cheese and spaghetti carbonara, I’d say less is more.



  • A step heavier. For the London example, think more like the Overground, the Purple Train or Thameslink. Or the many railways radiating out.

    For other examples, think systems like the LIRR in NYC, the RER in Paris or the S-bahn in most major German cities. (though the Berlin one functions more as a metro that’s just legally a train)




  • Really though, the most ardent defence of USC units is fuelled by great amounts of Copium. The US Customary set of measurements is several independent systems of measurements which often radically different origins and sometimes irrational conversions, all stacked upon each other and dressed in a trench coat. For instance, the mile has Roman origins while the inch and foot were defined separately, much later, and with a lot of regional variation. The French foot was longer than the English foot, which is why Napoleon was listed as 5’2" tall while he was actually closer to 5’9", or 1.71 m, which was pretty average for the time.

    Which one of these is more straightforward to calculate:

    • You are tasked with installing a rail along a 1 mile long bridge. You know you can use two half inch bolts to affix it every three feet. How many bolts do you need?

    • You are tasked with installing a rail along a 1,5 km long bridge. You know you can use two M12 bolts to affix it every metre. How many bolts do you need?

    Conversions within dimensions in USC require you to memorise arbitrary conversion numbers. Conversions within dimensions in SI require you to move the comma a few spots.

    Besides, if the US Customary system of units is so great, why did most of the world voluntarily switch to SI units?











  • Meanwhile, let’s also face that EV’s have to carry around large batteries. One advantage that ICE cars do have is the power density [J/kg] of petroleum fuel is leaps and bounds better than that if a lithium battery. This means that EV’s are likely to produce more road noise from rolling, the dominant source of noise above 50 km/h, as well as more wear to the roads, since wear is a function of vehicle mass to some pretty high power. (I thought it was m^(4), but I’m not sure)

    On top of that, while EV’s don’t have any tailpipe emissions, the power that they need still needs to come from somewhere. Thus the carbon emissions for use are a function of the national power grid of the place where you’re charging your car.

    Thus, A) if cars are already a fairly small part of the transportation mix, B) steps are taken to further improve the quality and availability of alternatives to cars, and C) the power grid is dominated by nuclear power and/or renewables, then EV’s could be better for the environment.
