I’m not trying to be rude here, but please read my post. Paying to remove ads is part of the ad business model. Anyone who pays to remove ads means the developer profited from ads.

Developers should make money. Just not with ads.

Almost all of Syncs business model is ads. The free version has ads and almost everyone who pays for it is doing so to remove ads. Which is just rewarding the implementation of ads. I also disagree with the concept of profiting from free user content with ads like Reddit does. Which was Reddits primary goal of preventing third party apps. They wanted the ad revenue themselves instead of third parties getting the ad revenue.

The only way this can be acceptable is to not have a free ad version and only have a paid version. That way you are paying for software and not paying to remove ads or profiting from free user content.

It’s nice how fast Lemmy is growing, but I think it is a good idea to manage expectations. In the world of free and open source software you can’t just throw money at the problem to make it better. The development of Lemmy will occur at will whenever someone feels like contributing. It’s not someones job to develop Lemmy so it isn’t guaranteed to happen at all.

Edit: Just for clarification I’m not suggesting to not donate. I’m just saying donating doesn’t guarantee development.

I’ve never really heard of this concept as I come skipped straight here from forums 15 years ago. People wrote posts about things they were interested in and people discussed it. Very rarely did someone simply post a link to another website with no comments of their own. It doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.

I wish people wouldn’t use Lemmy as a “link aggregator”. Instead of posting links to other peoples content how about having an original thought for once. Why is Lemmy acting as the comments section for some other website?

The fact that there is an ad version at all as a UI front end to an ad free FOSS back-end is a bit shameful. People buy it because they want to get rid of the ads. If they just sold the software with no free with ad version then they would be acceptable.

It’s not about the cost. It’s the principle of the matter.

I’ve tried almost all of them and shockingly Jerboa seems the best despite being the first as far as I’m aware.

Sync comes in last for having ads unfortunately. Or basically just disqualified.

I get the impression that people are for some reason uncomfortable with the concept of FOSS (Free and Open Source Sofwatre). Like they are not getting inundated with ads or things constantly asking them to give them money while getting something of value for free. They need to start inventing ways to bring money into the system so they can be comfortable again.

Things are working just fine and there is nothing to worry about.

People don’t need publicly shown gold stars to let everyone know they were a good person. You donate because you want to donate. At least on Lemmy.world they have made it known that they are doing just fine as far as donations go and if for some reason in the future they aren’t meeting those donation targets they might start asking.

Reddit? revenue? Not everything is about money. It is better that it is intentionally not about money. If someone wants to post their content on Lemmy they can do it because they want to do it. If they need a financial incentive to do it then they should not do it.

Even worse than the idea of trying to bring some strange monetary thing to Lemmy is trying to direct thought by rewarding specific behavior. This is a messed up form of conditioning that can basically be thought as punishing dissenting modes of thought.

No single instance should get to the size of 100 million users if we are doing federation correctly.

Seems like a risky move. The whole transition away from old Twitter could be over before bluesky even joins the race. It’s definitely lost my vote in favor of Mastodon. I can register for Mastodon right now.
