I used to believe this too. I was corrected and informed that if it collected as a donation it is not the company making the donation and they can not gain tax benefits from it. They also aren’t paying a sales tax on that money either.

The benefit is exclusively the good PR from arranging the donation, which to be fair, they did. If the donation came through a credit card they may have covered the ~3% transaction fee, although they could potentially write that off for the portion that the donation increased the fee by.

  • We do. But on Halloween, we trade showing off our children in cute costumes for candy. And I mean… I also buy candy for the other kids.

    It’s a holiday.

Teenagers in costumes are less cute.

I’ll pass out candy to anyone who comes to the door, and I like offering to parents as well, but I judge parents that have a big bucket for themselves the same way I judge people that empty bowls at unattended houses. Just because it’s technically allowed doesn’t make it approved.

  • As the owner of several fruit trees, I feel that cities are right to not plant them on city streets.

The fruit makes a huge mess and draws in pests and create slip hazards.

They require more maintenance than most non fruiting trees so they don’t grow too tall.

Things they drop have a weight that can harm people and property.

Food of a dubious source with unknown water supply could harm the public and leave the city liable, because you would have a hard time saying you didn’t know people would eat it.
