I think the only way to have “enough” money is to practice gratitude. Being poor is defined by stress, of course; I am not gonna tell you that your problems are all in your head. But when you get a better paying job, it’s easy to thoughtlessly spend more money and still end up feeling poor. So, don’t just excitedly spend all that money. Take a good look at what you appreciate about your current life and what you are proud of, and do what you need to cultivate these good things. Sometimes it is surprising how many of those things are free. Sometimes they need a bit of money to grow.

The other thing is that each time you cross a moral line, it gets easier to do so again. This is why i do not drink and will never drink. I think the same goes for accepting sponsorships from tobacco companies and other kinds of corruption. And of course being rich naturally shields you from the consequences of these decisions if you let it.

If I remember his coming out video, he’s a Democratic Socialist. Which, if the political compass made sense, would be just right of center. But I guess thinking people deserve rights is inherently left-wing to Americans lol

Thats not what I meant, but I can see why you read what I wrote that way. I personally think “There is no such thing as Truth” was a better place to mature away from than “I’ve been on this earth for 12 whole years, so I’m grown enough to know what the truth is”. I also think you missed the part where I don’t believe any of the moral relativism stuff anymore. My young adulthood was nearly 10 years ago, even the clooge I listed at the bottom is loooong gone.

I’m just glad I decided to go full moral relativism right away back then. It was a good way to speedrun maturity, although I did maintain some kooky beliefs into early adulthood such as

• “if you are not multilingual you can’t be a good person, and the more languages you speak the better of a person you are”
• “The Democratic party is a puppet of the Republican party, and in reality the U.S. is only pretending to be a two-party state”
• “The age of consent should be 25.”
• “Evil people can be good functioning members of society, so we shouldn’t discriminate against people who hold evil beliefs as long as they are nice to others.”

It was exhausting. Opposite reason from you, there was only middle ground, no black and white allowed. But it came from the same mental place. Pride, arrogance, nieveté.

I was a big fan of jreg pre-2020, but after giving up mainstream social media I currently believe that only cowards, frauds, and master satirists feel the need to use irony. It’s arrogant to think you are the third, and I dont think Jreg is either. I think he is a coward.

Extreme/insane positions on everything. Not just one or two insane positions, not just political extremism; when I say everything I mean EVERYTHING. No nuance allowed. And it has to be fully sincere, otherwise you are dealing with a Jreg.

There are milder versions of this, but I have rarely met a child that didn’t have a strongly held insane belief formed from their limited experiences. My favorite was a kid who told me that eating pasta supports fascism because it comes from Italy, so loving Italian products means you support Mussolini. Pizza is fine, though, because that’s American.

I remember back in high school I watched Sexplanations a lot. Introduced me to a lot of concepts I’ve been using to this day. I think I stopped watching her because I outgrew her channel.

Lindybeige was a formative part of my early nerd life. Unfortunately he’s a conservative and it’s a big part of his personality. I do totally agree with him about the British pound being superior to the decimalized euro though. I would literally beat someone to death if it would give me the opportunity to rearrange the values of dollars, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies into something based around a highly composite number like 240 or 360

We have proof that kids have never paid attention in school. For example, in Novgorod around 1250 A.D. a six year old boy named Onfim (later called Anthemius of Novgorod) was supposedly practicing his writing and basic arithmetic. Much of what archeologists have found were doodles of him being a heroic knight who hunted down his teacher, who was a horrible monster . These were buried in a waste pile, where they were rediscovered by archeologists. They are a treasured part of Slavic history and there is now a statue of him in his hometown.

I think the core of the problem is that back in the bad old days, things needed to be tuned up a bit before they would work right and there was a marked lack of standardization. Now, not only do our devices work right out of the box, bit they also have little quality of life stuff as well. I haven’t bought a battery-powered device in years that wasn’t partially charged when I got it, and most devices come preinstalled with all the basic utility apps.
