Yeah I’m for sure reading that later. My brain is just reading this like one of those sovereign citizen rants right now, despite there actually being valid points. I think it’s the emphasised word that’s messing with me.
Hell of a ‘first post reply of the day’
Yes, yes we do. I’ve recieved them personally
Well fuck.
What a weird word. Thanks
In soil science, we hand texture, where you rub the soil between two fingers and see how it responds to physical manipulation. There are a few tests: can you roll it into a worm? Does that worm break? How long of a ribbon can you make with it? You do this for each layer (horizon) and pits have a minimum of 3 horizons usually
Anyway, on large scale soil surveys, we can have hundreds to thousands of pits to do. The largest ones I’ve ever done were 1900 pits or so, thus a LOT of hand texturing, and pushing to get them all done.
To speed up this process I started texturing with both hands at the same time; each with a different horizon. Turns out I’m abi-texterous (seriously)
The funny part - I use that term loosely - is that the ivory bill was very closely related to pileated wood pecker which is a noisy as fuck bird. There are people out in the swamps of the Singer Tract looking for them like bigfoot hunters. They insist that the bird is very reclusive now.
That looks like an old Singer table with a new machine on top.
My grandma used to have one at the farm, that was the original, and powered by the pedal you see at the bottom
‘fun fact’ - the ivory bill wood pecker’s habitat was entirely within the tract of land that Singer company used to make these tables. Didn’t work out for the ivory bills at all. They are entirely extinct
I don’t know why you were downvoted; you are right. Plant based is the way to go, and I say this as your typical omnivorous white dude. Until we get more buy in from people (changing diets) and from corporations, it’s unlikely to change, though.
A few points I would like to make:
Soil degradation of corn:soy systems is largely due to tillage. No till is better, but perhaps not as good as agroforestry
Proponents of agroforestry often gloss over the changes required to actually practice it. Where a farmer can use large combines to harvest corn and soy relatively easily, he now has trees interrupting harvest, or its harder to harvest the diverse cropping systems (e.g., food bearing trees). While the benefits of argo forestry are real, so are the challenges.
Soil C sequestration from these systems is most likely temporary, and net neutral, but will reduce input costs
We need to switch away from beef - eat more chikn
/C/shitpost for me, lawl.
The vegan thing is a dumpster fire. They had a mod go off the deep end and start banning everyone.
I really don’t get how people let modding go to their heads. I. Mod a few small communities and big whoop. Even if I modded a bigger one, there is a broad line between acceptable content on Lemmy and unacceptable content. Just because you have a contrary or shit take does not mean you need to be banned. Just because people are getting butthurt doesn’t mean you need to ban offenders. Diversity of opinion is a good thing for a community, unless that opinion supports Nazism or some other shit which promotes hatred.
Mods here too, apparently.
Listen here, you thin-skinned shitgoblin. you might like to think you’re clever and can program, but I have it for veritable fact that you’re and underpaid grundle hair braider who is barely making ends meet.
Yeah, but would a bot creatively insult you, you slack-jawed, basement-dwelling rat fondler?
Yeah, but y’know, it’s a sensitive topic so I thought I would be explicit.
Lemmy has a wide range of viewpoints and I don’t want to be unjustly called insensitive or worse.
Fucking honestly - it’s the theme for their whole product line
For clarification, in case it is needed: I hate absolutely everything going on in Palestine right now. The fact that this continues, and is condoned by the west crushes my soul.
If only we could do something about it
