I am in my mid-30s, and play fortnite semi regularly. Zero-build is just a solid FPS, and the changing load outs keep it fresh. I play pretty much exclusively with friends my age that have moved to other parts of the country and it’s a great way to keep in touch with them.
90+% of this article is good, valuable, and interesting. I too ride on 3-4 lane roads and have dealt with aggressive drivers, it’s nice to be seen.
However this bit chafes:
The dismissive ‘male glance’ is real, on the bike as in all of life. I can distinctly recall men realizing another cyclist (me, almost 50) is behind them, at a red light or whatever, and looking back, only to discover a woman who is older than he is, on a not-interesting-to-him bike, with no interesting blingy gear on it, and have him turn away, barely able to acknowledge I was there at all. What was he expecting to see? A sexualizable object young enough to be worthy of his attention?
There is no winning, being catcalled or ignored is equally appalling to you, how is anyone supposed to go about their life in proximity to you? He could certainly say hi, but is not obligated or even expected to. His response likely has less to do with the fact that you’re a woman than it does with they fact they probably have something else on their mind.
On the east coast Raleigh, NC and southward is snowfree (snows maybe once or twice a year, tops).
Hi, I grew up in CNY and have been living in Upstate SC for the last 14 years. It is more affordable on the tax side. Our housing costs are catching up to NY (still less taxes). Job opportunity is very industry specific, and generally tough everywhere.
Moving is hard work (physically), but less of a hassle than switching your primary email address. If you have time, vacation to areas you think you might be interested in. When you go, don’t be afraid to be a tourist/outsider, ask for help/directions/opinions of people you cross paths with, it will really help you get a sense of the area and community. Some people might value a thriving board gaming community, while others are looking for climate/mountain/beach opportunities. If it’s something your worried about, also take a look at a natural disaster map to get a sense of what you might be in for.
I have found that most of Appalachia share a culture/ethos. There are a lot of similar attitudes and ideas among rural people in NY and rural people is South Carolina.

Can you point me to a time when capitalism did happen? Where governments and outside forces weren’t picking winners and losers in the market? In such a time what was the plight of the common worker? Did we see overwork, workplace safety, and child labor issues?
Third wave communism doesn’t seek to abandon the “free market” (which is free within bounds), it instead favors democracy in the workplace. Where all members of the organization are employee-owners including ceos and middle management and the “Board” is dissolved into either a representative or direct democracy made up of employee-owners. In this way one increases the incentives for each individual to perform and see the company perform well. This also mitigates much income inequality by allowing the workers a say in the compensation of middle and upper management.
I love seeing the positive impacts of our community. Please keep highlighting new communities. I was unaware of all of them and have subbed because of this post.
Capitalism didn’t appear over night. It took several attempts and iterations to get it anywhere near what it is today. Most modern theories on the implementation of Marxism focus less on centralized government authority and more on democracy in the work place, and eliminating 3rd party shareholders’ control. Much of the struggle with implementation of this, is that the existing financial structures aren’t set up to handle this type of thing well.
Put in a sand pit somewhere you are ok with them shitting. Training domesticated cats is an undertaking that in my limited experience comes down to giving them an option they’d prefer over their current behavior. Trying to dissuade a feral cat from shitting where they please humanely seems like a loosing battle.
I don’t know that it needs to be spelled out specifically for vegans, but maybe use it as the example for the be excellent to each other/no trolling rule to demonstrate where the line is crossed.
It’s also worth pointing out that herding/grazing animals play an important role in the ecosystem and soil restoration. They can and should be incorporated in solarpunk whether or not they are consumed. Our best indicator of when humans arrived at a location is when the local megafauna died off.
A couple of my favs: Moss, fantastic puzzle/platformer, great story and still family friendly & Asgard’s Wrath, single player action/rpg with good mechanics and a fully fleshed out 40hr campaign.

Read it last year and loved it and the sequel. Earth seed is neat as a concept because it does feel like in larger groups people need a religious analog as a set of guiding principles.
