If going for more fully open, freedoom is a set of two standalone FPS campaigns(freedoom phase one and two) that also supports doom mods by having free texture/sprite replacments that slot into places where a mod is attempting to use original doom textures/sprites.

An important aspect of roguelikes is simply to know what you have. The colored potions, scrolls and rings all get their effects randomized at the start of every new game and identifying them is huge for your survivability.

It’s best if you can identify items without using them first, I use the alchemy pots to transform identify scrolls into the version that randomly identifies four at a time for this reason.

Also, use the feature that lets you identify hidden doors on at least the walls of a floor’s entrance and exit, hidden rooms can contain valuables like potions.

Every region(themed set of five floors) has a total of three scrolls of upgrade and two potions of strength, make sure to get these before the bosses on the fifth floor of the region.
