  • I found exercise that I actually wanted to do. For me, this started out as cycling. I enjoyed being able to go places and see things. I used to just cycle casually with my family but when the COVID lock downs happened, I would go on 30+ mile bike rides. It was nice to get out, see things and the roads were pretty empty around me so I could go just about anywhere.

    The biggest problem with that around here is that it gets really cold during the winter so I started doing a combination of cardio, hand weights and basic exercises like pushups, etc to just get my heart rate going and sweat a bit. I do have an indoor bike trainer but I don’t enjoy that quite as much because it’s just sort of boring compared to being out and seeing scenery.

    I was sort of stuck at this weight of around 190, which by the BMI charts is a few pounds overweight for my height. This last fall, I was challenged by my sister in law, along with her other siblings, to run a half marathon. I used to play soccer and I used to run for a good while in my 30s - it’s how I stayed in shape back then and was able to lose a good bit of weight. So I started running and I found it to be really easy, probably because I didn’t have to fight through the getting winded - it was mostly my leg muscles getting used to running. Now I run around 30 miles a week, even in the cold. The only thing I struggle with now is taking care of my knees and leg muscles as that’s the biggest issue I run into that could prevent me from keeping it up. I’ve been running since November and am down to 180 and I feel great.

    Now food wise, I mostly just try to be generally aware of going in excess for anything that is just sugar or a food that calorie dense but not providing nutrients. I try to keep fruit around the house. if I think I am hungry, I ask if I am hungry enough to eat and apple or a plum - something like that and will do so if I am. I still snack on stuff like pretzels, crackers, etc. I eat things that aren’t healthy for me but I try hard to not go overboard on anything.








  • There is still a certain excellence to the model of how interaction works for how I enjoy consuming online conversations. It reminds me of a better old school forum experience.

    I do still use reddit when I find search results for things I want to know, especially where reddit was the biggest community for some topics but I usually end up there from search engines.


  • I felt like I wanted to be part of the solution by stopping my usage of reddit. I didn’t want to continue to support a site I fundamentally disagree with on how they handled their monetization strategy by screwing over so many people.

    At this point, I no longer doom scroll reddit or even lemmy and it feels good to not waste my time doing so.


  • To me, zfs is like the Gentoo of file systems. If you actually use the zfs features and do a lot of digging and experimentation before you go all in on it, it’s not bad; it really can be quite good. If someone wants a filesystem that they format and forget, ext4 and xfs are still solid options. I used to use ext4 for most of my filesystem needs and xfs for my long term storage on top of mdadm. I just really wanted zfs snapshots.


  • At some point, I had stopped playing Minecraft and I had an account since alpha but because of their account migrations where I hadn’t created a new username on the 2nd sign on system and the fact that so no longer had a receipt, I wasn’t able to recover my account. It was quite disappointing.

    But I bought an account to play on Windows in bedrock because my son started playing and he wanted to play together with me. We still play and we could play for hours, just exploring and mining for stuff.








  • That’s what si used to love about running when I did it; t was time to put my thoughts together and just mentally prepare for my day, as I would run at like 5:30 am In the summer to avoid heat.

    I switched the cycling due to it feeling much better on my body but cycling is a much more active workout of needing to actually pay attention but I do feel like I enjoy cycling much more. More to see and a strong sense of accomplishment plus it burns s lot of calories which doesn’t hurt.


  • This is a similar reason as to why I use Debian as my base operating system and for just about every service I run on my host, the processes are containerized using Docker. It gives me the flexibility to choose the best “operating system” that supports the software I want to run at the release cadence that suits how I want to consume it for a given piece of software, and the base host OS is just that and nothing more. Upgrades to new Debian releases are non-events and I get no surprises with my apps in containers.

    I can upgrade the underlying container base operating systems as I need which I choose Alpine, Debian, and Ubuntu based on which fits my needs. Alpine gets updates quickly, Debian is good for core services that I would normally run natively on my host, and Ubuntu hits well for wide support of almost every other service I need. So I get a stable base with the option to go as quickly as I need if I have a need for a newer package. It’s not always about having the newest software, it’s about stability where it counts.
