  • I’ve heard of a black person being turned away at a bar by bouncers in Austria (which has similar culture to Bavaria), which is anecdotal. Also anecdotally, when I was there myself in the less-urban parts of Bavaria, I didn’t see any non-white people.

It didn’t remind me much of rural USA or what you described it as (my recollection of that is a bit fainter and more dated than urban USA).

Edit: the person told me the bouncer said “we don’t serve your kind here.”

  • Same. The fact that it was “cheap” in this regard was heavily weaponized by my childhood best friend to mock me.

Memory unlocked: him beating me every round on Street Fighter EX plus Alpha (?) and then pointing out that every win by his was some kind of super special win, not even just a regular one.

He comparatively never wanted to play Soul Calibur

  • give space to your own creativity

This is key. One will inevitably make many different design and UX decisions vs whatever preexisting projects are out there, making one’s project more suited to at least a few contexts than anything preexisting.

In addition to being plain demotivating, looking at other stuff too early basically encourages one to just make the same decisions as others, becoming much more like just a second implementation of what already exists.
